How to Stop Your Dog Pulling on the Leash: A Step-by-Step Plan

A dog who pulls on the leash turns every walk into a tug of war. The good news: loose-leash walking can be taught at any age, with consistency, a few treats and a little patience. Here's a simple four-step method.

Why your dog pulls

Dogs pull for one simple reason: it works. Every time they move forward while pulling, they get closer to whatever caught their interest. Their natural walking pace is also faster than ours, and the outside world is full of fascinating smells. So pulling isn't your dog challenging you, it's a habit that has been rewarded, often without anyone noticing.

The right gear to get started

Before you begin, stack the odds in your favour:

  • A no-pull harness with a chest clip. It won't do the training for you, but it reduces the pulling force and gives you time to learn without having your arm yanked.
  • A 1.5 to 2 metre leash, long enough to stay slack. Avoid retractable leashes while training: they keep constant tension on the line and actually reward pulling.
  • Small, high-value treats, kept in a treat pouch so you can get one out in a second.

The four-step method

Step 1: reward a slack leash

Start somewhere quiet, at home or in the garden. As soon as the leash hangs in a "J" shape under your dog's chin, say "yes" and give a treat level with your leg. Repeat often: your dog needs to learn that the spot beside you is the best place to be.

Step 2: stop the moment it gets tight

As soon as the leash goes tight, stop and stand still, without pulling back or talking. Wait until your dog eases the tension, turns round or takes a step towards you. At that exact moment, praise them and set off again. They learn that pulling stops the walk, while a slack leash keeps it going.

Step 3: turn around

If stopping isn't enough, calmly turn around and head the other way. Reward your dog as soon as they catch up with you. Mix up your direction so they keep an eye on you rather than the horizon.

Step 4: build up the difficulty gradually

Next, move on to a quiet street, then a park, then somewhere busier. Each time you raise the level, reward more often. A focused 10-minute session beats an hour of struggling.

Give them proper freedom too

A dog who never gets to burn off energy will find it hard to walk calmly. Build some free time into every walk for sniffing and exploring. A 5 or 10 metre training leash is perfect for this: your dog gets a wide range while staying attached, and you can use the time to work on recall. Always clip it to a harness rather than a collar.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pulling back: yanking on the leash creates conflict and can unsettle your dog.
  • Being inconsistent: if pulling works half the time, it still pays off. Everyone in the household needs to follow the same rules.
  • Asking too much, too soon: a street full of dogs and bikes is the expert level, not the starting point.
  • Forgetting to reward: notice and reward the good moments, not just the mistakes.

How long does it take?

Every dog learns at their own pace. Some get the idea in a few sessions, while others need several weeks, especially if they've been pulling for a long time. Consistency is what counts: a few minutes of practice on every walk makes a real difference. If you're facing particular difficulties, don't hesitate to get help from a local dog trainer.
